Spring is Approaching – Plan Your FireSmart Activities!
Posted On: February 20th, 2026

As spring approaches, now is a good time to start thinking about what FireSmart actions you will take on your home and property this spring. Keep in mind that up to 90% of home ignitions are caused by embers that can be carried more than two kilometres ahead of the main fire. That makes all of Radium susceptible to ignition from embers!

Things you can do now:

  • Start developing a plan for what actions you would like to take this spring on your home and property when you do your yard clean-up.
  • Talk to your neighbours about working together to help protect each other. Consider joining the FireSmart Neighbourhood recognition program (which will become the Local FireSmart Collective program in 2026) to support Neighbourhood initiatives. Check the link below or contact Steve, Radium’s FireSmart Coordinator, for more information.
  • Book a free FireSmart home or business assessment and have Radium’s Wildfire Mitigation Specialist complete a FireSmart Assessment free of charge for you. You can book now, and Steve will contact you to set up a time. FireSmart Assessments are available from early April until late October. Booking now will get you in earlier for your assessment.
  • If you already have a FireSmart Assessment that was completed in 2025, check what actions you want to undertake this spring and what actions are potentially eligible for a rebate.
  • Visit the FireSmart BC page, FireSmart BC landscaping guide and Radium Village FireSmart page for ways to help guide your spring clean-up plan.

Radium can assist by supporting your neighbourhood with guidance and expertise in the Neighbourhood Recognition Program; no-cost FireSmart assessments for homeowners and businesses; rebates to homeowners for eligible activities completed on their properties; assistance with FireSmart debris disposal (chipping program); and presentations to interested groups.

If you have questions, reach out to Steve, Radium’s FireSmart Coordinator, at FireSmart@radiumhotsprings.ca.
