TBD 2025 – Neighbourhood Champion Workshop
- The workshop is open to all residents of Radium who have concerns about wildfire protection and are willing to collaborate with their neighbours to take initiative in reducing wildland urban fire risks. No prior knowledge or experience is required, just an interest in decreasing wildland urban fire risks within our community. Participants will learn to recognize wildland urban fire hazards and how residents can implement simple solutions into an action plan that mitigates the risk of home ignition, thereby reducing losses in their neighbourhood.
- It will be scheduled based on interest from the public.
To register your interest, or learn more, please email Steve at FireSmart@radiumhotsprings.ca with your name, phone number, street address, and email address.
June 8th, 2025 – FireSmart Landscaping Talk – Winderberry Farm
- The area FireSmart programs(Radium, Invermere and the Regional District of East Kootenay) are hosting a FireSmart Landscaping talk at Winderberry Farm and Greenhouse in Windermere on June 8th from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm. Are there fire-resistant plants, and do hardscaping and mulching choices make a difference? How does FireSmart landscaping fit into the broader environmental picture, including water conservation, pollination, birds, other wildlife, native plants, and invasive species?
June 18th, 2025 – Annual Radium FireSmart Community Chipping Day
- Radium will hold its annual Community Chipping Day on June 18th. This program allows residents to remove combustible vegetation from their properties, with the chipping crew handling the debris removal. Residents can put out FireSmart Debris up to 10 days before June 18th for removal on the 18th. Registration is required, as the crew will only visit the addresses on its list. To register, email village@radiumhotsprings.ca, and provide your name, civic address in Radium, and a contact number.
Chipping Event Guidelines:
Please read through the guidelines, as any piles not following them will be left for homeowners to clean up
- The preferred length is 1 to 2.5 metres (3 to 8 ft), and a maximum diameter of 13 cm (5 inches).
- Piles must be placed 1 metre back from the edge of the road and must not obstruct any drainage or culverts.
- Residents can place debris 10 days before the chipping day. This allows for two weekends’ worth of work.
- Piles containing prohibited items will be left; the permitted material will not be separated and chipped.
- Piles must not be placed earlier than the indicated start date.
- The thickest end of the branches should be facing towards the road.
- Do not include rotten wood, which cannot be put through the chipper.
- Only combustible tree and shrub materials will be chipped (no construction materials/treated wood, leaves, needles, garbage, deciduous trees, or bark chips).
- Do your best to keep your piles tidy and easy to pull apart.
- Make multiple 1 metre (3.5ft) wide piles rather than one huge one.
- Please remember that chipping events facilitate the FireSmarting of Home Ignition Zones surrounding pre-existing homes. Large-scale/lot clearing is not part of this program and should be taken to your nearest appropriate disposal facility.
If you are unsure where to start, please take a look at the FireSmart Starts at Home Guide or complete a FireSmart Home Ignition Zone Self-Assessment.
